Exploring the Dynamics: Characteristics of Online Media

Written by:

New media is a big part of how we communicate online. It lets us share and exchange ideas and information with others in different communities and networks. There are lots of social platforms that let us interact with each other whenever and wherever we want. We can comment, share, and like things to have conversations and show our support. It’s also a way for us to show who we are and what we’re interested in, whether it’s for personal reasons or for businesses to connect with customers.

1. Interactive
When you use interactive media, you can make things happen by giving your own input. It’s like a two-way street where you can share information and talk to others using text, pictures, videos, and sounds. Interactive media aims to involve users and allow them to interact, unlike non-interactive media. In the past, media like TV and radio didn’t need active involvement, making viewers passive with limited control over their experience.
Interactive media is not only about making people more active, but it also enables them to connect with others, including companies and organizations, that they wouldn’t usually have the chance to interact with. It allows for the sharing of ideas and information freely.
Moreover, interactive media has an educational aspect to it, making it a valuable tool for learning. It encourages students to actively participate in their learning process, collaborate with others, and have more control over what they learn.
Some of the common examples of interactive media are Instagram, X, or Facebook accounts etc.

2. Multimedia
Multimedia is when different types of media like text, images, sound, video, and animation are combined in a digital way.
It mixes these elements together to make content that is interactive and exciting for the senses.Social media platforms heavily rely on multimedia to let users share various content like photos, videos, and live streams, enhancing the overall user experience with visually captivating posts.
Multimedia not only makes posts more engaging but also helps users effectively communicate and express themselves on these platforms.Multimedia has greatly changed journalism by altering how news is presented and viewed. Through multimedia, reporters can add videos, images, and infographics to their stories, offering a deeper insight into a topic. This allows for more engaging storytelling that helps readers better grasp intricate subjects.Multimedia development often involves using programming languages like JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, Python, and Java.
These languages offer tools and frameworks to control and showcase multimedia content across different platforms and devices.

3. Real time update
Real-time updates are all about quickly and instantly sharing information as it happens or is created. This ensures that users get the most up-to-date data without any noticeable delays. This constant stream of information occurs almost instantly, giving users immediate access to the newest updates.Real-time updates enhance user experience by giving immediate access to relevant information, making decision-making faster.
Businesses use real-time data to make informed decisions, improve processes, and respond quickly to changes or opportunities.
Organizations gain a competitive advantage by effectively using real-time updates to be quick and responsive in dynamic environments.

4. Hypertextuality
In new media, there is a networking function that facilitates the free movement of a large amount of information among interconnected nodes in the network. Hypertext is a key tool for adding interactivity to websites. It allows for various types of media to be included in a single page, enriching the content and distinguishing online journalism from traditional media.Online journalists could add hyperlinks that relate their content to other contexts.
Unlike traditional linear storytelling, hypertext in online media offers a multi-linear approach, allowing users to actively participate by navigating through hyperlinked pages.

5. Shifted time

Online content is always available. Even if the content is archived, readers can still access them at any time. Online journalism utilizes the concept of time in a different way. It allows stories to be stored and accessed at any given moment. This convenience is not readily available in other forms of media. In traditional print media, if you wish to read a newspaper from a previous day or month, you would need access to the news organization’s library or collect newspapers daily and store them, which can be quite laborious.

6. Targeted advertising
Targeted advertising is an effective tool for attracting the right customers and growing your business. By carefully selecting your target audience, you can ensure that your advertising budget is being used efficiently and that you are reaching the people who are most likely to be interested in your products or services.

Some of the advantages of targeted advertising include more relevant and effective advertising messages, higher conversion rates and return on investment, improved customer experiences, increased brand awareness, better targeting of specific demographics and interests, the ability to reach a wider audience with greater accuracy, the ability to track and measure campaign success, lower cost per acquisition, the ability to retarget previous customers, and better alignment with overall marketing strategy.

In conclusion, new media revolutionizes communication, interaction, and information dissemination by empowering users, enhancing engagement, and enabling personalized experiences through multimedia and real-time connectivity. These characteristics redefine how individuals and organizations engage with content, learn, collaborate, and market products/services in today’s digital age.
